A new addition to search results is getting rolled out by Google this week that makes it much easier to shop for products that are popular.
Whenever you search for keywords that are products, like “dress shoes,” Google will now include a new section on the search results that displays products from stores across the web that are popular. This will show up whenever shoes, accessories, and clothes are searched for.
While looking through the new popular products section, users have the option to filter results by department, size, and style. Once a product is selected, Google lists the sites that have the product available for purchase, letting users compare prices quickly and easily.
It is even going to be possible to look at product reviews inside of the same search result page. However, users still have to go to the retailer’s page to purchase any products in the section.
To have products show in the popular products section, merchants are encouraged to apply the appropriately structured data markup to product pages and/or set up product feeds in the Google Merchant Center.
Google has said that this new feature will aid in driving more organic traffic to merchants. Hopefully, this is true, but we will see – this feature lets people do nearly all of the browsing on Google rather than the merchant site.
More updates like this will be on the way soon, as Google is working on more consumer experiences for both discovering and browsing new products.
